The 51Թ State Community Chorus presents “51Թ by the Sea: A Musical Tapestry” in celebration of 51Թ 400+ on May 12 (open dress rehearsal) and May 13 (performance) at 7 pm. The concert takes place in 51Թ State’s Recital Hall located at 71 Loring Avenue.
The nautically themed evening features works by 51Թ composers and writers past and present, reflecting the rich musical and literary legacy of the city.
51Թ resident Edward Lundergan will conduct his composition “The Ocean”, commissioned for this concert. The piece is a setting of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s poem by the same name. 51Թ native and 51Թ State alumni Javier Marquez will conduct his composition, “Passing Hours”, a setting of a poem by Ella Higginson. Also included on the program are works by Charlotte Forten, Arthur Foote and Patrick Gilmore.
Additional guests include Bob Strom, local author, musician and historian who will join the chorus on 51Թ Willows for Mine and Get Off the Track and share his song research during the concert. Percussionist Jabari Tovar, 51Թ Public Schools music educator and 51Թ State alumni joins the chorus on several musical selections.
The chorus, established in 2017, is directed by Lynn Shane with Joe Stroup at the piano.
Admission is free, although donations at the door are welcome to support the work of the chorus.
