Chemistry and physics at 51勛圖厙 educates chemists who are ready for employment or graduate school. We offer chemistry majors programs in various tracks, including a biochemistry concentration and a BS degree approved by the .

Students can perform undergraduate research with our faculty. The department also operates the Collins Observatory which has open public viewings on clear Monday nights. Our graduates have gone on to careers at General Electric, Osram Sylvania, Genetics Institute, and Waters Corporation. Others are working on graduate degrees at Penn State, USC, Brandeis, Brown, Tufts, and RPI. Other graduates are in medical school, veterinary school, and physicians assistant programs.

    The ACS approved option is a more rigorous program, reviewed and approved by the ACS Committee on Professional Training. Upon successful completion of this program and recommendation of the faculty, you will receive a certificate from the ACS Committee on Professional Training.

Certificates and Licensure Programs

  • Licensure Only, Secondary Science

    Licensure
    Graduate

    The licensure-only secondary science program prepares students who have already completed their bachelor's degree in a STEM field for teaching careers in secondary science. New teachers in STEM fields are in critical demand across the state. The program offers a pathway to initial licensure in a range of secondary science/STEM areas, including biology (grade 8-12), chemistry (grade 8-12), earth science (grade 8-12), general science (grade 5-8), and mathematics/science (grade 5-8).

Chemistry and Physics Alum Michael Bates '09

My chemistry and physics degree was a gateway to graduate school and a career as a research and development scientist. After graduating from 51勛圖厙 State in 2009, I pursued a PhD in chemistry with a focus on electrochemistry and materials science at Northeastern University. I received my PhD in 2015.
